Saving Slices from Website Template PSD Files

If you own or have access to a copy of Adobe Photoshop, you can take advantage of the PSD files that come with our website templates. Making your changes to the PSD files give you a considerable amount of flexibility, as well as the option to make some more extensive changes you would otherwise not be able to do.

However, once you've made your changes to the PSD file, the website template will still look the same. In order for the template to reflect the changes you made to the PSD file, you will need to regenerate the GIF/JPEG images used by the template HTML file.

The PSD file is divided up into what are known as slices. Each slice represents one of the GIF or JPEG images that the HTML file uses. We can use Adobe Imageready, an application bundled with Photoshop 6.0 and higher, to resave each of the slices to their respective GIF and JPEG images.

After you've made your changes to the PSD file, follow these steps:
  1. Open the PSD file in Adobe Imageready.
  2. Click and hold on the slice tool in the toolbar. A submenu will appear with more tools. Select the slice select tool. You should now see blue lines dividing up the template into the slices we mentioned earlier. If for some reason you don't see these, press CTRL+H.
  3. Click on the slices you want to save. Pressing CTRL while clicking will enable you to select multiple slices. If you'd like to just save all slices, skip this step.
  4. Go to File / Save Optimized As....
  5. Navigate to the folder containing the template's GIF/JPEG images.
  6. Change the HTML and images option to Images only.
  7. If you wanted to save all slices, leave the All slices option selected. Otherwise, change it to Selected slices to save only the slices you selected earlier.
  8. Click Save to save the slices. You may be prompted to overwrite some existing images, in which case just click Overwrite All.

The slices you selected (or all slices) have been saved to the appropriate GIF and JPEG images needed by the template HTML file. Simply repeat this process whenever you update the template to save your changes. Please note that this only saves changes made to the images. You will need to edit the actual HTML file to change text links, content, etc.
