Our Site

  • What is 4Templates?

We create beautifully designed and coded templates and themes for websites and blogs, as well as amazing templates for print you won't find anywhere else. We're based out of Brentwood, TN (just south of Nashville) in the United States.

  • I'd like to work with you. Who should I contact?

Drop us a line via our contact form. We'd love to hear from you.

Ordering

  • How do I order a template or theme?

Just click on the green Buy Now button and you'll be taken straight to the checkout page. Or, if you want to buy multiple template or themes, click on the Add To Cart button.

  • Do I need to register for an account to order a template or theme?

You don't need to manually register for an account to order a template or theme. Just choose Create a New Account at checkout and a new account will be created for you automatically. If you've already registered for an account through other means (such as through our referral program), choose Use My Existing Account and provide your email and password.

  • Is the price really a one time fee?

Yes! The price you pay is a one time fee, with no hidden or recurring charges of any kind, and there's no limit on how long you can use the template or theme either.

  • Once I've paid for a template or theme, how do I download it?

Just sign in to your account and you'll be able to view the order you just made and download your template or theme. If you had a new account created at checkout, your new account's automatically generated password can be found in your email receipt (which you'll receive right after completing your order). If you don't receive your email receipt, please contact us immediately.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept PayPal, Google Checkout, Amazon Payments, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

  • Can I view prices in a currency other than United States Dollars (such as Euros)?

Yes! Click the Currency link in the upper right-hand corner and select the currency you want to use. You'll then be able to hover over any money amount (such as prices, cart totals, and even referral program earnings) and see an estimated conversion to your selected currency.

Note: These are only estimates based on recent exchange rates (updated every 24 hours). All charges and payments will still be in United States Dollars.

  • Is ordering from your site secure?

Absolutely. All interactions with our ordering backend and payment processors are secured with high grade SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption.

  • I'm an EU resident. Why are you collecting VAT on my order?

EU Directive 2002/38/EC requires non-EU companies selling Electronically Supplied Services (ESS) into the EU to collect and pay the tax authorities VAT on all B2C (business-to-consumer) purchases by EU residents. Electronically Supplied Services includes the supply of websites and hosting services, downloaded software, downloaded images, text or information, and several other categories of digital products and services.

    • What VAT rate will apply to me?

The standard VAT rate for your country of residence will be applied to your order. Here are the current rates for each EU member state:

      Austria:20%Belgium:21%Bulgaria:20%Croatia:25%
      Cyprus:19%Czech Republic:21%Denmark:25%Estonia:20%
      Finland:24%France:20%Germany:19%Greece:23%
      Hungary:27%Ireland:23%Italy:22%Latvia:21%
      Lithuania:21%Luxembourg:15%Malta:18%Netherlands:21%
      Poland:23%Portugal:23%Romania:24%Slovakia:20%
      Slovenia:22%Spain:21%Sweden:25%United Kingdom:20%
    • When does VAT get added to my order?

VAT will be added to your order after you have provided your country of residence and chosen a payment method.

    • I'm a business with a valid VAT number. How can I exempt my order from VAT?

At checkout you'll be prompted to declare whether your purchases are for personal or business purposes. If your purchases are for business purposes, you'll then be prompted for your legal company name and your VAT number (eg. IE0123456789). Once this information has been provided you will not be charged VAT on your current or future orders.

    • I'm a business and my order was exempted from VAT. Will I receive an invoice for my taxes?

Yes. Your order receipt will provide all of the information necessary for your tax purposes, including our company name and EU VAT number, as well as your own company and tax information.

    • I'm a business, but I don't have a VAT number. What do I do?

We're only authorized to exempt an order from VAT when a customer provides a valid VAT number. If you're a business without a VAT number, you'll have to indicate your order is for personal use (at checkout) and pay VAT.

If you need more information about this policy, please feel free to contact us.

  • I didn't get my order's email receipt. What can I do?

Please contact us with your order number, the email address you used to place your order, and an alternate email address (just in case we can't get through to your primary one).

  • I need to download my templates and themes again. How can I do this?

Simply sign in to your account, view the order you want to download again, and click the Download button for each template or theme you want to re-download. If your download time has expired click on the Request an extension link and we'll unlock it for you.

  • I'm having trouble ordering. What can I do?

Please contact us with a detailed description of what's happening and we'll figure out what's going on.

  • The template or theme I purchased just isn't right for me. Can I exchange it for something else?

In some situations we do allow for exchanges, so please contact us and we'll see what we can do.

Our Products

  • What exactly do I get when I buy a template or theme?

Our template and themes are provided as ZIP files, which is a common and convenient way to transmit multiple files over the Internet as a single, compressed file. If you're not familiar with ZIP files, check out this tutorial.

  • Can I work with these template and themes on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or [insert your operating system here]?

Yes. Our template and themes aren't applications so their image files and HTML/CSS files (where applicable) can be edited on any operating system.

  • Where do the photos and graphics in these templates and themes come from?

They're produced and provided by ArixMedia Photography, which is our own in-house photography studio (also based out of Brentwood, TN).

  • Can I license a higher resolution version of a photo or graphic used in a template or theme?

Depending on the exact photo or graphic this might be possible. We keep the raw, full resolution images from pretty much all of our photo shoots so there's a good chance we can dig up a high resolution version of a photo for you to license. With graphics it's a little iffier since many of those are created specifically for Web use. In either case, if you're interested in doing this please contact us.

  • I want to change the photos and graphics in a template. How do I do this?

Photos and graphics within a template's content area (ie. the area with all the paragraphs of text) can usually be replaced by simply swapping out their image files with your own of similar dimensions, though this only applies to Web-oriented templates. Photos and graphics that are incorporated into the design itself (like a border or an image that's blended with something else) have to be changed with an image editor (like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, or Paint.NET).

  • Can I incorporate my own logo into a template or theme?

Yes. Just use an image editor (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, or Paint.NET) to copy and paste your own logo on top of the appropriate part of the template.

  • Can I change a template or theme's color scheme?

Yes. You can do this with Adobe Photoshop and the template's or theme's Photoshop source files (.psd). If you're working with a Web-oriented template or theme you'll probably need to update its stylesheets as well. If you need assistance with this just contact us.

  • Can I change a template or theme's fonts and/or font sizes?

Yes. For most template and theme types you can do this by simply writing your own text labels in the style of your choosing. For Web-oriented template and themes, you can simply change the font and font sizes in the included stylesheet.

  • I like the look of a template or theme but it doesn't cater to the topic I need. Can this be changed?

Yes. Most of what ties a template or theme to a particular topic or subject are the photos it uses, so changing this is (usually) as simple as swapping out the template or theme's photos with ones that are more suitable (see this FAQ entry). If you need help with this please contact us.

  • Can you help me customize my template or theme?

Of course. Just contact us with what you'd like to have done and we'll take it from there.

  • Can I use these templates and themes for work I'm doing for a client?

Yes. Our license allows the use of our templates and themes for client work, but be aware that you must provide the client a copy of the license since they, as the end-user of the template or theme, are the actual owner of the license you purchased on their behalf. Also note that our licenses are issued on a per-seat basis, so you can't purchase a template or theme once and use it for multiple clients; each client must have their own separate license. For more information please consult our license, or if you have questions about a specific use case please contact us.

  • Are there any other restrictions on what I can do with a template or theme once I've purchased it?

Our licensing is pretty flexible, but for more specific information please read the license itself or contact us if you need clarification on something.

  • What's with that "Lorem ipsum" text I see in every template and theme?

"Lorem ipsum" text (or just "Lipsum") is just gibberish text meant to serve as realistic-looking text filler in design work.

  • Can these templates and themes use a language other than English?

Yes. Our templates and themes aren't tied to a specific language so you're free to use them in whatever language you require.

  • I'm not seeing some of the headings and labels in my template. What's going on?

Some of our templates use special, non-standard fonts and/or text effects to make their headings and labels more interesting, which means they have to be written out on images using an image editor. To label these, simply use any image editor with a text editor (like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, or Paint.NET). If you have trouble identifying a particular font or style, please contact us.

  • I'm pretty new to working with template and themes. How do I get help?

We try to answer a lot of questions in this FAQ, but if you can't find what you're looking for here feel free to contact us. We're more than happy to help.

  • Do I have to link back to 4Templates or credit you guys for the design?

Nope. You don't have to mention or link to us at all, although you're certainly free to do so if you choose (check out our referral program).

Website Templates

  • What is a website template?

A Website Template is a pre-built website design, complete with HTML files and all supporting images, stylesheets, jQuery plugins (if applicable), and Photoshop source files.

  • What comes with each website template?

    Each website template includes:

    • HTML files (.html)

These are the "bones" of the template and are what you'll edit in your text or HTML editor. Each HTML file represents a different layout you can use for each of your website's pages; for example, "twocolumn.html" is a two column layout, and "homepage.html" is a unique layout meant for your homepage.

    • Stylesheets (.css)

Stylesheets handle the stuff that determines the overall look of the template, including spacing, fonts, formatting, and (if the template you're using includes standards compliant XHTML and CSS layouts) page layout and element positioning.

    • Images (.jpg/png/gif)

These are the graphics and photos that make up the template's appearance. The graphics can be edited in pretty much any image editor (including Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, and Paint.NET), while the photos can (in most cases) be changed by simply switching them out with replacements of equal size.

    • jQuery plugins (.js) (if applicable)

If the template includes dynamic or interactive features (such as a gallery, slider, or drop down menu), these are the files that make it all happen.

    • Photoshop sources (.psd)

These are the template's layered and sliced source files (.psd), which can be worked with and edited in Adobe Photoshop (version CS3 and up). The source files contain all of the elements used by the template, giving you the freedom to customize its design as you see fit.

    • Fonts (.ttf)

This is a collection of free and open source fonts used by the template, bundled together for your convenience.

  • What can I use to edit a website template?

To edit the template's graphics you can use almost any image editor, including Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, or Paint.NET. To edit the template itself you generally have two options:

    1. Use an editor with a visual interface

Editors with visual interfaces allow you to manipulate the template's design with a drag and drop, point and click interface that gives you immediate feedback on any changes you make. If you tend to work better visually or if you're new to web design and don't want to dig into learning HTML and CSS just yet, this is probably the way to go. Examples of editors that fall into this category are:

    2. Use a text editor

You can dig straight into the HTML and CSS code with a text editor. This is a more advanced approach and requires you to know HTML and CSS, but it gives you the most control over the template's design and code. If you decide to do this, you probably already have a text editor on your computer so you don't have to download anything else. If not, or if you want an editor that's more suited to editing HTML and CSS code, check these out:

  • These website templates include "layouts", but not "pages". What does that mean?

Every website is going to be different, and every website is going to have different page needs. Some websites might need only 5 pages. Others might need dozens. Some might even need hundreds of pages. We know this, which is why we don't include a fixed number of pages with each website template and make you force your content to match it. Instead we include layouts, which is just what it sounds like: different layouts you can use as starting points for your website's pages, no matter how many pages you need.

  • Will your website templates resize to fit my content?

Yes. Unless a template has the "fixed height" attribute, it'll grow vertically to seamlessly fit however much content you throw at it — even if it's thousands of lines long!

  • Some website templates have search forms. How do I get these to work?

When you see a search form on a website, you're really only seeing half of the equation: the other half is the server-side script or application that takes your search query, looks up what you're searching for, and then sends the search results to your browser. Since a website template isn't a complete website, you're only getting the first half of that equation. To get it working, you need to pair it up with a second half. To that end, there are three ways you can do this once your website is set up:

    1. Use Google's Custom Site Search (recommended)

Google offers its own free website search service, which takes only a few minutes to integrate and can be customized so the search results match your website. For more information on this service and how to set it up, go here:

      http://www.google.com/cse/
    2. Connect the form to something else on your website that already does search

If your website has already has software installed with search capabilities (like a forum or store), you can modify the template's search form to redirects its search queries to that software. Usually this is as simple as changing the search form's input field names to match those of your software's own search form.

    3. Install a search engine script on your website

If neither of the previous options work for you, you can install an actual search engine script on your website. The exact script you use will depend on your needs as well as what kind of web server you're using, so we only recommend doing this if you know what you're doing. If you want to take this approach and if you're using a PHP-based server, here's a good place to start:

      http://www.hotscripts.com/category/php/scripts-programs/search-engines/

  • Some website templates have login forms. How do I get these to work?

Like a search form, a login form on its own doesn't do much beyond send a username and password to a server-side script or application (which is what actually logs you in). If you'd like to get a website template's login form working, you'll first need to determine why you want to use it. For example, do you want to simply password protect a few pages your website, or do you want to have a full-blown customer area (much like our own)?

If you already have software installed on your website that has user authentication (for example, a forum or a store), the simplest approach is to modify the template's login form to redirect its input to that software. Usually this is as simple as changing the login form's input field names to match those of your software's own login form. If not, you can either install a piece of software like this, or you can look for something that provides user authentication. What you install will depend on your needs and your server platform, so make sure you check with your web host first. If you happen to be using a PHP-based server, here's a good place to start:

    http://www.hotscripts.com/category/php/scripts-programs/user-authentication/

  • I'd like to use a website template for my online store. Can I do this?

Yes. There are two ways to do this:

    1. Use a payment service with integration tools (recommended)

If you just want to set up a simple online store and don't really need a whole lot in the way of advanced features, your best bet is to go with a payment service that offers integration tools, such as PayPal and Google Checkout. Both of these services are free and take only a few minutes to set up on your site.

    2. Install online store software

If you need something more sophisticated than what PayPal and Google Checkout have to offer, you can install dedicated online store software on your own website. Doing this will provide you with more advanced store features, but setup can be much more challenging. The software you go with will depend on your needs and your server platform, so check with your web host before you start looking. If you're using a PHP-based server, here's a good place to start:

      http://www.hotscripts.com/category/php/scripts-programs/e-commerce/shopping-carts/

  • Can I add additional features to a template (like a drop down menu, gallery, videos, etc.)?

Yes. You can add pretty much anything to a website template. Just make sure you follow the instructions that come with whatever you're adding. If you want us to add some of these features for you, feel free to contact us.

  • Can I use these website templates with [insert CMS name here]?

Since our website templates are standard HTML templates, they aren't designed to work with any particular CMS (content management system). However, this also means someone familiar with your CMS's template/theme format should have no trouble converting them over to its format. In some cases we might even be able to do the conversion for you for a separate fee, so if you're interested in having this done please let us know.

  • Can I use these website templates with [insert web host name here]?

Our website templates will work with any normal web host. However, if your web host uses its own online website building tools and doesn't allow you to upload files, you might run into issues. If you're not sure about this, contact us with your web host's name and we'll look into it for you.

WordPress Themes

  • What is WordPress?

WordPress is a hugely popular open source blogging and content management platform. Originally started as way to simplify building and maintaining a blog, it has grown to become a powerful general purpose platform for running all kinds of websites.

  • What is a WordPress theme?

A WordPress Theme is a self-contained package that defines the look and feel of a WordPress site, and thanks to WordPress' awesome Dashboard installing one takes just a few seconds.

  • What comes with each WordPress theme?

    Each WordPress theme includes:

    • The Theme ZIP (.zip)

This is the actual file you install in the Dashboard (which is really easy — check out this tutorial).

    • Photoshop sources (.psd)

Most (if not all) of our WordPress themes actually begin life as website templates, so the theme includes the layered and sliced Photoshop source files (.psd) of its base website template to simplify graphics customization (requires Photoshop CS3 and up).

    • Fonts (.ttf)

This is a collection of free and open source fonts used by the template, bundled together for your convenience.

  • How are these WordPress themes licensed?

WordPress is an open source project released under the GNU Public License (GPL). To properly comply with this license, our WordPress themes are "split licensed". This means some parts of each theme are covered by the GPL license, while others are covered by our own content license. Here's the breakdown:

The GNU Public License (GPL) ONLY applies to these parts of each WordPress theme:

    • PHP Files (.php) inside the Theme ZIP

The standard ArixMedia Content License applies to EVERYTHING ELSE, including but not limited to:

    • Photoshop sources (.psd)
    • Images (.jpg/png/gif) inside the Theme ZIP
    • Stylesheets (.css) inside the Theme ZIP
    • JS Files (.js) inside the Theme ZIP that do NOT have an alternate license declaration header

So in short, the GPL only applies to the PHP files included with each theme. Everything else is subject to our standard ArixMedia Content License (unless otherwise noted). If you have a question about this split license arrangement, please contact us.

  • What version of WordPress do I need to use these WordPress themes?

All of our WordPress themes are designed to work with WordPress 3.1 or higher. While you might be able to get them working older versions, we can't guarantee this (and hey, you should really be upgrading to the latest version anyway).

  • I'd like to set up WordPress on my web host. How do I go about doing this?

There are two ways you can go about this:

    • See if they can do it

Being a popular platform, WordPress is actually offered by a number of web hosts as a free installable feature. If you think this may be the case with your web host, contact them and see if they can get it set up for you.

    • Install it yourself

If you end up having to install WordPress yourself, don't panic: it's super easy. Just follow WordPress' own instructions and you'll be up and running in no time:

      http://codex.wordpress.org/Getting_Started_with_WordPress#Installation

  • How do I install a WordPress theme?

It's easy. Just check out this tutorial.

  • Can I use these WordPress themes at WordPress.com?

No. Our themes are designed to work with standalone installations of WordPress, so they won't work with the WordPress.com hosted blog service.

  • Can I customize a WordPress theme's page layouts?

Sure. In addition to customizing a theme's images and stylesheets, all of our themes include the following files you can also customize:

    • header.php

      The theme's header.

    • footer.php

      The theme's footer.

    • sidebar.php

The theme's sidebar and widget areas.

    • loop.php

The theme's "loop", which handles the look of multiple posts.

    • single.php

The theme's "single" template, which handles the look of a single post.

    • page.php

The theme's "page" template, which handles the look of a normal page.

Note: These files use a mix of HTML and embedded PHP code, so we recommend having a pretty decent understanding of both before diving in and customizing things. If you get stuck, or if you need to customize something but don't want to risk breaking something, feel free to contact us.

  • How do I use widgets with these WordPress themes?

All of our themes are built to support widgets, so just go to Appearance / Widgets in your Dashboard to set them up.

Business Card Templates

  • What is a business card template?

A business card template is a ready-to-use and print business card design, sized and formatted to meet standard business card printing specifications. All of our business card templates are provided at 600 DPI for maximum print quality.

  • What comes with each business card template?

    Each business card template includes:

    • High Quality TIFFs (.tif)

This is the high resolution (600 DPI) business card design, compatible with any image editor, including Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, or Paint.NET. In the case of double sided business card templates, an additional TIFF is included for the back of the template.

    • Photoshop sources (.psd)

These are the template's layered source files (.psd), which can be worked with and edited in Adobe Photoshop (version CS3 and up). A source file is included for the front and (where applicable) back of the template, giving you the freedom to customize the design as you see fit.

    • Fonts (.ttf)

This is a collection of free and open source fonts used by the template, bundled together for your convenience.

  • What can I use to edit a business card template?

A business card template is basically just an image, so you can use any image editor, including Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, or Paint.NET. If you want to take customization a step further, you can edit the template's Photoshop source files with Adobe Photoshop (CS3 and up recommended).

  • Once I'm done editing a business card template, how do I get it printed?

There are a few ways you can do this:

    1. Use an online printing service

This is probably the fastest and easiest way to get your business cards printed. Just upload your finished business card design, answer a few questions about card stock type and quantity, and within a few days you'll have your printed business cards. We recommend the following services:

    2. Use a local printshop

If you prefer to deal locally, you can take your finished business card design to any local printshop and have your business cards printed there.

    3. Use your home printer

If you only need to do a small run of business cards you can also use your own home printer. Most newer printers include printing software to make the process easier, but even if you have an older printer or don't have the software you can use any image editor (Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, or Paint.NET) to print multiple copies of your business card to a single sheet of card stock. In either case, be sure to research the kinds of card stock your printer can handle and pick something suitable.

Referral Program

  • What is the referral program?

Our referral program is a quick and easy way to monetize your website's traffic. Just refer people to our site and you'll earn 25% on anything they purchase.

  • Does it cost anything?

    Nope. Completely free.

  • How do I get set up?

It's easy! Here's what you do:

    1. Sign up for a free account

Go to our signup page, fill in your details, and create your account. Once you've activated your account you'll be able to sign in.

    2. Link to us using your unique referral link

This is the link you have to use to send folks to our site. To get it, just click on Referral Tools in the Affiliate section of your account page.

    3. Start earning!

That's all there is to it. Once you've set up your link you'll earn 25% on all purchases made by anyone it sends our way. All earnings get added to your account balance, which you can then spend at our site or have sent to you at the end of the month (see below for details).

  • How do I get paid?

Once your balance reaches 30.00 you'll be eligible for a monthly balance payout, which happens the last week of each month. If you're not at 30.00 you won't receive a payout, but don't worry: your balance doesn't go anywhere. It'll stay on your account indefinitely until you either spend it, or it gets paid out to you after it has reached the 30.00 threshold.

  • Can I use my earnings towards purchases?

Yes! Any earnings you've accumulated can be used to purchase templates from our site, either in conjunction with another payment method or outright. Just select your payment method at checkout and at the payment step you'll be asked if you want to use your balance towards your order.

  • Do I need to provide any kind of tax information?

If you're a US resident or corporation you'll need to fill out IRS Form W-9 to declare your tax status. We'll also issue you a 1099 at the end of the tax year if you're an individual and you've earned 600.00 or more with us. If you're not a US resident or corporation and you have no US-based activities that would classify you as a US taxpayer, you'll need to fill out IRS Form W-8BEN to declare you're exempt from US taxes. You only need to provide this information to receive payouts. For more information, click on the Tax & Payout Setup link in the Affiliate section of your account page.

  • Can I purchase templates after passing through my own referral link?

Yes! You're allowed to purchase templates after passing through your own affiliate link. This will earn you 25% back on anything you yourself purchase. You can find a shortcut to this by clicking the Referral Tools link in the Affiliate section of your account page.

  • I'm already a customer but I'd like to become an affiliate. How do I do this?

Simply log in and click on the Become an Affiliate button on your account page. Once you've confirmed your account information you'll become an affiliate and can start earning right away!

  • Can I deep link (for example, to a specific template or listing) and still get credit for a referral?

Sure. Simply add the "?go=XXXXXXXXX" to the end of any URL on our site. Note: If the URL already has a "?" query attached to it, use "&go=XXXXXXXXX" instead.

  • I have a high traffic or high visibility website. Can I negotiate for a higher referral rate?

Yes! Please contact us and we'll be happy to discuss this with you.

  • I'd like to use your template thumbnails and preview images on my website. Can I do this?

Sure. Just make sure the thumbnails and preview images are no larger than what we have on our own site, and under no circumstances show any live demos of our templates (in part or whole).
